The lifestyle in our area is considered that of Southern hospitality. We are one of the most unique areas of Kentucky and are located in the Golden Triangle of the state with easy access to Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati.

History & Heritage

History is abundant in our area. After all we are the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. Fort Harrod State Park, Shaker Village, Beaumont Inn, and Old Mud Meeting House are just a few of the local sites. Harrodsburg was founded in 1774. Shopping

Harrodsburg still has a downtown area with shoppes and restaurants. Please contact our local Main Street program, Harrodsburg First, at (859) 734-6811.
There are several groceries and other shopping within the city limits.  The city of Burgin and the community of Salvisa also hosts some stores and restaurants.  Call the Chamber at 859-734-2365 for more information. 

Spas & Wellness

Three organizations serve the Mercer area:  Image Fitness and Fitness Edge and Ephraim McDowell Wellness are local fitness clubs. Find them and more at www.mercerchamber.com

Dining

All types and ranges of dining options are available from elegant dining at the Beaumont Inn and Shaker Village, to local sandwich shops such at the Kentucky Fudge Company and the Olde Bus Station. There are Mexican restaurants like Casa Grande and eating on the Lake is a special treat during the summer as the Herrington Lake Marinas offer alfresco dining. Popular local restaurants in Burgin and Salvisa stay busy all year.

Nightlife

Several music venues are open at night and provide entertainment.  Larry Sanders and the Borderline Band at the Burgin Barn has country music every Friday night.  For more information, contact the Tourism Commission at (800) 355-9192.

Outdoor Adventure

Hiking, kayaking, canoeing, motor boating,cycling, hunting and fishing a just a few of the outdoor sports that folks participate in locally. There are recreational sports leagues for youth and some adults.

Science & Nature

Special to note are Shaker Village restaurant for its seed to table fare, The Kentucky Fudge Company is a tourist favorite and Beaumont Inn. Mercer County Farmers' Market offers seasonal beef, vegetables, fruits and Kentucky Proud products. 

Family Fun

Pioneer Days in August is the biggest family festival and we offer many others: The Fort Harrod Beef Festival in June, the Mercer Fair in July and the Fort Harrod Jazz Festival in September. There is an annual Settlement & Raid at Fort Harrod State Park in June which is a re-enacting, live history event.  The Mercer Cooperative Extension Office, youth sports leagues and many others offer great activities.

Shaker Village has a variety of events annually. Please call (859) 734-5411. Locally, An annual Beef Festival (June) , The Mercer Fair and Horse Show (July), Pioneer Days (August) and the Fort Harrod Jazz and Arts Festival (September) are held.  See the chamber website for these events at www.mercerchamber.com.

Volunteer & Community Service

There are many volunteer opportunities in Mercer.  They include animal rights groups, community organizations and clubs.  Contact the chamber at 859-734-2365 for how you can best serve.

Religion

Spiritual life is very important to the people of Mercer Co. All faiths are represented in various sizes throughout the county. Mercer Ministerial Association is a large and active organization and the Christian Life Center is a central hub.

Did You Know?

  • The first revival outside of the colonies "The Wilderness Revival" happened in Harrodsburg in April and May 1776.
  • The land of the Conover Education Center was in an area of Dutch settlement where the oldest standing church building (1800) in Mercer is located. That is the Old Mud Meeting House and school.
